Partners in Habitat Developement

The Partners in Habitat Development program (PHD) was initiated in 1998 as a partnership between the Eastern Irrigation District and Pheasants Forever Calgary. Since then many more partnerships have developed and the program has become a cooperative venture consisting of a diverse cross section of industry and government as well as both corporate and private sectors.

With the long term goal of working in all 13 irrigation districts, the PHD now operates in 5 other irrigation districts including Bow River, Lethbridge Northern, Raymond, St. Mary River and Western.

After 10 years in operation, the program accomplishments include:
In excess of 3 million dollars invested towards the creation and enhancement of wildlife habitat within Southern Alberta.

  • Partnered with 350 private landowners.
  • Planted 600,000 trees and shrubs.
  • Seeded 770 acres to permanent grass cover.
  • Provided 130 kilometres of fencing for habitat enhancement and protection.
  • Installed 38 water delivery systems.
  • Created or enhanced 12 wetland basins.

The PHD has been a great success in its first ten years of operations due to the fact that it’s a cooperative project that includes many partners, with landowner participation being the most critical component.
