GIS Analyst/Developer

The Eastern Irrigation District is one of 13 Irrigation Districts in Southern Alberta. The EID having its main office in Brooks, Alberta owns approximately 600,000 acres of land within the County of Newell. This land base is vital to the overall operations of the EID as it supports water storage and conveyance for agriculture and cattle grazing, industrial development and research activities and provides a diverse range of habitat for wildlife and permitted public recreational opportunities. The EID is seeking a GIS Analyst/Developer to assist in various projects managing its associated infrastructure across its broad land base.

Under the direction of the Information Services Supervisor, the GIS Analyst/Developer will complete various GIS and related projects, including providing internal GIS support with respect to presentations and mapping. This non-remote position is a maternity leave replacement but may be extended to assist the Information Services Supervisor in migrating various datasets into ArcGIS and advancing the District’s web mapping to accommodate these datasets using ArcGIS Enterprise and various other ESRI applications. The responsibilities and qualifications for this position are as follows:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete GIS data and mapping assignments using multiple data sets to create paper and digital maps, reports, files and charts in accordance with company standards (e.g. EID Irrigation infrastructure; EID lands; oil and gas surface leases; pipelines and other leases; land-based resources; parcel mapping; custom maps, wall maps, map books; aerial and other photography; drawings; new and revised irrigation assessments; creating and optimizing irrigation pivot layouts; area calculations; and infrastructure rehabilitation changes).
  • Utilize advanced tools in ESRI’s ArcGIS to perform cartographic and analytical GIS work.
  • Verify and maintain various data sets.
  • Assist and support the Information Services Supervisor with a broad range of projects and tasks.
  • Assist and support the Information Services Supervisor in the modernization and migration of various datasets and attributes that are currently stored in various databases.
  • Development of maps for use in ArcGIS Field Maps, custom web maps and other ESRI applications.

Key Skills and Competencies:

  • 2 year diploma in GIS, or equivalent education from a recognized post-secondary educational institution, combined with a minimum of 2 years of relevant GIS experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of computer based technology including ESRI ArcGIS Pro 2.8, AutoCAD Map, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook).
  • Working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS Pro Model Builder, Python, ArcPy, ArcGIS Enterprise, and ArcGIS Dashboard
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with SQL databases (preferably PostgreSQL)
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with HTML, Javascript and ESRI Javascript API is an asset.
  • Familiarity with graphic arts software, preferred (Adobe Illustrator, Indesign, etc.).
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to enter data efficiently and accurately.
  • Ability and willingness to work independently as well as productively and cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.
  • Maintain skills and knowledge to keep pace and current in the industry.
  • In possession of a valid Alberta Class 5 operator’s license.
  • Clean criminal records report.

Equipment Operator – Hi Hoe

The Eastern Irrigation District (EID), Brooks, Alberta, seeks a full-time Equipment Operator to join our Construction team.

The EID, a leader amongst Alberta’s irrigation districts, is an integral component of the economic, environmental and social fabric of southeastern Alberta. Our core business is the delivery of water to 298,000 acres of irrigated farmland plus all of the lakes / reservoirs, wetlands, industries, municipalities and many rural acreages throughout our region.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate EID equipment to maintain the EID irrigation distribution and draining system including the cleaning of ditches, repairing of washouts, installing culverts, installing structures, loading trucks, installing pipelines (concrete & pvc), rebuilding drain ditches/canals, and placing Rip Rap, Armour or gravel.
  • The applicant should be able to work both with limited supervision and in a crew environment.

Key Skills and Competencies:

  • Must have a valid Class 5 Drivers’ License that is insurable under the District’s insurance policy.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience with a high hoe; having versatility in operating various heavy-duty equipment would be an asset.
  • Basic surveying experience, working with Laser’s & GPS
  • Knowledge of site plans.
  • Basic knowledge of earthworks.
  • Mechanical background would be an asset.
